Caliberite Shuts Up for Charity
November 18, 2011
Silence is golden, most certainly golden. On this pleasant Friday morning in Edinburgh all is well in the Caliber offices: murmured conversations around spread sheets are punctuated by the tip-tapping of keys and the notes of indie music leaking from oversized headphones. Yet something seems amiss, the office hasn’t been this quiet in ages – what could possibly have happened?

The Panda Made Caliber Do It
November 2, 2011

At Caliber we love a good marketing slogan – all too often these days we are bombarded with cheesy, tepid puns that fail to capture attention. That’s why it was amazing to see the WWF (no, not that WWF) come out with one of the best tag-lines we’ve seen in recent years: The Panda Made Me Do It. It is a call to action that is charming and which brings to mind images of gun-wielding, yet adorable, pandas hi-jacking SEO offices across the UK. Hopefully this campaign will help the SEO industry forget about algorithmic bears and focus on the real ones.
The cause behind this catchy five word line is even better. It’s about doing little things to help protect the natural world, whether you want to adopt a turtle or sponsor an acre of sustainable forest.
As their site says: It’s about you – and all the simple but effective things you can do to help protect the natural world. Whether you’re an experienced environmental campaigner or brand new to the whole thing, we’ll make it easy to get involved. Just tell everyone the Panda made you do it…
To help raise awareness of this event, Caliber will be participating in what will hopefully be a huge online awareness. Tweet the hashtag #ThePandaMadeMe between 7pm and 8pm GMT tomorrow (Thursday the 3rd) so we can get these belligerent pandas trending!
Better yet, you can head to the WWF’s site to get involved in this cool, and catchy, campaign. Also be sure to check out their excellent short film.
Also, does anyone have any ideas for the WWF’s next tagline? Anyone who can top The Panda Made Me Do It deserves numerous gold stars.
3 SEO Myths that Need to Die
October 4, 2011
It seems not a day goes by without a new, ridiculous myth taking root within the SEO community. These usually start with misinformed SEOs and journalists making incorrect judgement calls based on a single data set or piece of information, but there are a few myths that just won’t die. For some reason the SEO community seems to have got them stuck in their teeth and they pop up from time to time masquerading as new, factual information. Although there are loads of these types of commonly held misunderstandings still floating around, here are the three that I think need to be laid to rest forever:
Your Competitors Can’t Hurt Your Rankings
This myth was started by Google themselves when they stated that competitors cannot hurt your rankings by buying dodgy links and pointing them at you. When this was proven to be untrue, Google later backtracked and admitted that competitors can in fact hurt your rankings. At the end of the day Google’s algorithm is set up to automatically penalise or ban any website which breaks its guidelines – how can an algorithm know that it these infractions were committed by the website’s owner or put out there by competitors with malicious intent?
This tactic has become popular with “black hat” SEO’s as a legal way to get rid of their competition quickly and efficiently, with some of the more unscrupulous companies even offering it as a service to their clients.
Toolbar PageRank is Important
The myth about Toolbar PageRank changes every so often and is growing to be so complex that even the more knowledgeable SEO’s have had the wool temporally pulled over their eyes by some of the posts on respected blogs such as SEOmoz and SearchEngineWatch. Most of the myths come from the misunderstanding of what Toolbar PageRank and True PageRank actually are. Many mistakenly believe them to be one in the same, but in fact Toolbar PageRank and True PageRank are different things and Toolbar PageRank forms just one part of a website’s True PageRank score.
One thing Toolbar PageRank is useful for is judging the crawl rate of a website, as Toolbar PageRank is purely a score of the links pointing to the domain; the higher the score is the more chance there is of GoogleBot landing at the website and crawling.
SEO is Dead
This is the myth that I hate the most – every time there is a new technology or algorithm change this myth rears its ugly head again. It’s categorically untrue: the SEO Industry has been reporting higher turnovers year on year, which proves that SEO is actually becoming more important to businesses online.
The death of SEO was first reported back in 2008 during the rise of social media websites such as Twitter and Facebook, two tools that have become an important part of the SEO’s marketer’s toolkit. What people (in particular the press) need to realise is that, as with any other industry, the SEO industry adapts to every new online development that comes along and will continue to do so.
This is just a small number of the huge amount of SEO myths that won’t seem to go away, but it’s by no means a definitive list so I’m bound to have missed some truly terrible ones. What’s your most hated SEO myth?
